John W Ainsworth	John was the son of Henry and Mary who in 1901 lived at Pleasant View West Ardsley. John was 7 years old at the time of the census and the youngest of 5 children. He was either born in East Ardsley or nearby Tingley and enlisted into the West Yorkshire Regt., as 1720, later being transferred to the Northumberland Fusiliers as 40901. He was KIA on 23 October 1917 aged 24 and is remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial
Frank Atkinson	Frank Atkinson was the son of John who in 1918 lived at Providence Place, Tingley. Frank was born in the Tingley area and enlisted in Morley where he joined the RASC as T/4/263853. Transferring to the MGC after its forming in 1916 as L/Cpl. 90239. Frank died on 26 April 1918 and is remembered at Cologne Southern Cemetery.
Sam Auty	Samuel Auty was the son of Jesse and Grace who in 1901 were living at Kitson Street, West Ardsley with their family of 4 and a boarder and visitor. Jesse was a labourer at a local colliery. Samuel was born in West Ardsley in 1898 but enlisted into the KOYLI as 526036 or 52663 in Pontefract - 2 sources give two differing numbers. Sam was KIA on 2 September 1918 aged 20 and is remembered at Vaulx Hill Cemetery near Bapaume.
William H Bairstow	William Henry Bairstow was the son of Jno and Mary Jane Bairstow - Jno being born in Wath and Mary J in Normanton. William was one of a number of children found in the 1901 census all of which were born in Soothill and living there at the time of the census. William enlisted in nearby Leeds where he joined the Kings Own Scottish Borderers and became Pte., 16481
Stead Bairstow	Stead was born in 1899 in West Ardsley, one of 6 children to William Henry and Grace Bairstow who in the 1901 census were living on Hay Beck Lane. Stead enlisted into the KOYLI as 205194 but was later transferred to the Prince of Wales's Own (West Riding Regt.,) as Pte 260092. He was KIA on 25 April 1918 aged only 19 years and is remembered along with many others on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
Harold Bedford	Harold was the son of George H Woollin (Woollen) Bedford and Annie who in 1901 were living with their two children on Westerton Road. No positive information can be found as to his war service
Dennis Beevers	Dennis was the son of James and Annie Beevers who in 1901 were living at Mount Pleasant, Kippax. James was a yeast dealer born in Holmfirth and his wife Annie, was born in Wakefield, while all the seven children listed in the census were born in West Ardsley. Dennis enlisted in Lichfield while living in Halifax. He joined the RAMC as 29423 but later was in the Highland Light Infantry as Pte., 333789. He was KIA on 19 October 1917 aged 36. He is remembered at La Plus Douve Farm Cemetery, approx. 10 km south of Ypres. Dennis had married by this time and his wife was living at Mount Pleasant, Kippax.
Joseph Binks	Joseph Arthur Binks was the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Binks who in 1901 were living at Shaw Cross and Joseph snr was a Blacksmith. Joseph jnr was one of seven children mentioned in the census - all being born at Shaw Cross while Joseph snr was born in nearby West Ardsley. Joseph enlisted in Pontefract where he joined the Royal Engineers as 224665, he later transferred to the Alexandra, Princess of Wales's Own (Yorkshire Regt.,) as 46152. He was KIA on 11 April 1918 aged 29. He left a widow, Jane who lived at Council Houses, Tingley.
Arthur Bradley	Arthur, was the son of Peter and Lillie, who in 1901 were living on Hight Street, Morley. He served as a Sergt., 7375 in the West Yorkshire Regt., He died on the 18 September 1916 and is remembered at Guards Cemetery, Lesbeoufs.
Clifford Broadhead	Clifford was the son of Edward and Annie who in 1901 were living at Hill Top, West Ardsley where all the family had been born. Clifford stated on his enlistment that he had been born at Woodkirk, while living in West Ardsley but infact enlisted in Wakefield where he joined the ASC as 297199, later joining the Lincolnshire Regt., and became Pte., 49325. He was KIA on 22 March 1918 aged 19 and is remembered on the Pozieres Memorial.
Richard Burton	Richard was born in 1885, the son of Charles and Ann Burton of who in 1901 were living at Sheard Row, West Ardsley - Richard being one of eight children. He enlisted in Leeds, where he joined the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders and became Pte., 3607. Richard died of wounds on 20 July 1916 aged 32 and is remembered at Etaples Military Cemetery, approx. 30 Km south of Boulogne and is one of over 11,000 identified casualties

Ernest Chappell	Ernest Chappel was the son of Alonza and Florence who in 1918 were living at The Old White Bear Inn, Tingley. Ernest enlisted in Wakefield even though he gave his place of residence as Bingley. He joined the West Riding Regt., as Pte., 33862 and was KIA on 31 August 1918 aged 19 years old. He is remembered at Vis-en-Artois British Cemetery, Harcourt.
Harry Crossland	Harry was the son of Fred and Sarah Ann Crossland. Harry stated that he was born in Halifax when he enlisted in Pontefract into the DLI and became 44967. He died on 3 April 1918 aged 19 and is remembered at Montecchio Prescalcino Communal Cemetery Extension, appprox.16 km north of Vicenza, Italy. He lied alongside over 430 identified casualties. By this time his parents were living in Tingley.
John Dowson	John was the son of John and Annie Dowson who in 1917 were living at Westfield Buildings, Tingley Common. John stated that he was born in Morley, where he enlisted into the Arthyll and Sutherland Highlanders and became Pte., S/40479. He died of wounds on 24 April 1917 aged 23 and is remembered at Faubourg D'Amiens Cemetery near Arras.
Sam Evans	Samuel Bailey Evans was the husband of Elizabeth ( who later became Elizabeth Baldwin) of Thorpe Lane, Tingley. He was born in Tingley and enlisted in Leeds where he became a gunner in the Royal Field Artilliery, no 20878. Sam was KIA on 11 December 1915 aged 26 and he is remembered at Ypres Reservois Cemetery along with over 1500 identified casualties and over 1000 unidentified casualties.
Thomas Flemming	Thomas was born in Woodkirk but when he enlisted in Leeds he stated that he was residing in Wakefield. He joined the YLI as 17671 and later transferred to the York and Lancs as Pte., 19141. He died of wounds on 3 July 1916 only a few days after the first day of the Battle of the Somme. He is remembered at Warloy-Baillon Communal Cemetery Extension, near Arras.
Ernest Gash	Ernest was the son of John and Serena who in 1901 were living in West Ardsley. John being born in Scopwick, Lincs., and Serena was from South Elmsall. Ernest enlisted in Normanton, stating that he resided in Hemsworth, when he joined the KOYLI as 16977, later he was transferred to the Royal Muster Fusiliers as Pte., 2099. He was KIA on 9 August 1915 and he is remembered on the Helles Memorial, Turkey. The Helles memorial stands over 30 mts high and can be clearly seen as ships pass through the Dardanelles
Jessie Gill	Jesse was the son of William and Ellen of Leeds Road, West Ardsley. He enlisted in Morley, where he joined the KOYLI as Pte., 35337 or 35837 ( sources differ). He was KIA on 23 January 1917 aged 24 and he is remembered along with over 54000 identified casualties on the Menin Gate, Ypres.

Fred Hawthorne	Fred was the son of Thomas Hawthorne who in 1901 was a widow living with his parents Dan and Maria in Scarbro' street, West Ardsley. No information could be found to positively identify his place of death.
Fredk W Maskell	Frederick was the son of Mr T and Mrs A Maskell (stepmother), who at the time of Fredericks death were living at 40 Dewsbury Road, West Ardsley. He served as pte., 47011 in the Leicester Regt., and died on 15 November 1918 aged 19. He is remembered in Louth Cemetery, Lincolnshire
Alfred Mills	Alfred was born in Morley and enlisted in nearby Leeds, where he joined the KOYLI and became Pte., 24212. He later was transferred to the Lancashire Fusiliers as Pte., 27970. Alfred died of wounds on 29 September 1916 aged 24 and is remembered at Mont Houn Military Cemetery, Le Treport. By this time he had married and his wife was living at Topcliffe Row, Tingley
Willie Siddle	William Siddle was the son of Benjamin and Ann Siddle who in 1901 were Grocers on Wakefield Road, Morley. Benjamin was born in Wakefield and Ann being born in Sandy Bedfordshire. Willie and his sister Bessie were both native of Morley. William attended Morley High School and enlisted into the York and Lancashire Regiment as no 38968. He was KIA on 13 October 1917 aged 20 and is remembered at Hooge Crater Cemetery near Ypres
Rowland Naylor	Rowland was the husband of Alberta who in 1918 lived in Syke Lane, West Ardsley. Rowland enlisted in Batley, joining the Yorks LI as 3807. He later moved to the MGC after 1916 when the unit was formed. He died on 3 January 1918 and is remembered at Merville Communal Cemetery Extension just north of Bethune.
Harold Procter	Harold Proctor was the son of George and Mary Ellen who in 1901 lived at Hill Top. George was a carpenter/joiner and the family consisted of five children all born in West Ardsley as was their mother, George being born in Mixenden. Harold enlisted in Batley where he joined the KOYLI as 52616, he later transferred to the Coldstream Guards as 24479. Harold was KIA on 4 November 1918, only a few short days before Peace, aged 21. He is remembered at Villers-Pol Communal Cemetery Extension near Valenciennes along with 152 identified casualties, 39 known only unto God and 74 German casualties.
Joseph Rigby	Joseph Rigby was the son of John and Ann who in 1918 were living in West Ardsley. Joseph enlisted in Pontefract, joining the KOYLI as 241176. He was KIA on 14 Marcy 1917 aged 34 and is remembered on the Memorial at Thiepval along with over 72000 identified casualties.
Charlie Rodgers	Charles was the son of Fred and Sarah who in 1901 were living at Bruntcliffe Road, Morley. He enlisted in Leeds where he joined the RFA and eventually rose to Sergt. 775091. Charlie married a young lady named Edith and they lived at Beech St, Tingley. Charles was KIA on 28 January 1917 aged 27 and is remembered at Vlamertinghe New Military Cemetery near Ypres along with 1812 casualties.
Arthur W Simpkin	Born in 1895, Arthur Wilson Simpkin was the son of John W and Emily who in 1901 were living in the High Street, Midsomer Norton. John W a mining engineer, was born in Drighlington and Emily in Morley while Arthur and his siblings were born in Midsomer Norton. Arthur was a member of the Alexandra, Princess of Wales's Own (the Yorkshire Regt.,) and held the rank of Captain. He was KIA on 30 September 1918 aged 22. being remembered at Ruyaulcourt Military Cemetery near Bapaume. By 1918 his parents were living at Norton Royd, Woodkirk.
Harry H Simpkin	Harry Hargreaves Simpkin was the younger brother to Arthur Wilson Hargreaves above and was born in 1896. He also enlisted in the Alexandra, Princess of Wales's Own (the Yorkshire Regt.,), also holding the rank of Captain and was KIA on 22 March 1918 aged 22 and is remembered on the Arras Memorial
Herbert Slater	Herbert was born in 1893, the son of Ephraim and Ann Slater who in 1901 were living in West Ardsley. At the time of the census all the family stated they were born in Tingley. Herbert enlisted in Dewsbury where he joined the KOYLI as 202446. He was KIA on 3 May 1917 and is remembered on the Arras Memorial
Samuel Slater	Sam Slater born in 1900 was the brother of Herbert (above). No further information can be found to determine his resting place.
Harry H Smith	Harry Healey Smith was the son of William and Clara Maria Smith who in 1901 lived at Hollerton Lane, West Ardsley. Harry enlisted in Wakefield, and eventually joining the KOYLI as 62419 - He had previously been 7441 in the TR Batt. Harry was KIA on 21 May 1918 aged 19 and is remembered at Berles New Military Cemetery. By 1918 his parents were living at Allerton (Hollerton) Farm.
Herbert Smith	Herbert in 1901 was six years old and living with his four siblings and his parents Nicholas and Harriet at Upper Green, West Ardsley. No further information can be found to determine his resting place.
Oliver Speak	Oliver, born in 1892, was the son of John W and Harriet Speak who in 1901 were living at Kitson Street, West Ardsley and was the enldest of the children living at home at that time. He was born in Ossett and enlisted in Morley where he joined the KOYLI and became Pte., 66578. He married Grace and lived at Old Road, Farsley. Oliver was KIA on 8 November 1918 - only a few short days before Peace was declared. He is remembered at the Dourlers Communal Cemetery Extension with 193 identified casualties, 14 unidentified and 108 German casualties - 62 of which are unidentified.
Colim Sumpter	Colin born in 1893 was living at Carr Head, Stocksbridge in 1901 with William A and Sarah L Moorhouse an their two children. Colin is stated as being stepson to the head of the household - William. He enlisted in Leeds where he joined the Northumberland Fusiliers and became L/Cpl 238056. He married Ethel and they lived at Syke Lane, West Ardsley. Colin was KIA on 14 April 1918 aged 25 and is remembered on the Pozieres Memorial
Fred Sykes	Fred, born in 1893 was the son of John and Ann of Common Side, West Ardsley. He enlisted in Morley where he joined the Prince of Wales's Own (West Yorkshire Regt.,) and became Pte., 268036. He was KIA on 12 April 1918 aged 25 and is remembered at The Huts Cemetery, approx. 6 km South of Ypres.
Jack Taylor	Jack enlisted in Leeds where he joined the West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own) as no 3/8721. He was KIA on 12 October 1916 and is remembered along with many others who have no known final resting place - The Theipval Memorial
Ralph Taylor	Ralph, born in 1900, was the son of Alfred and Anne Taylor. Ralph a coal hewer was born in Honley but his wife Anne, stated that she was born in America U.S. and that she was a British Subject. Their children were born in Batley. Ralph when he enlisted in Wakefield, stated that he was born in Woodkirk. He joined the KOYLI and became Pte. 17360. He died of wounds on 6 July 1916 and is remembered at Etaples Military Cemetery.
Willie Thorne	William Thorne enlisted in Batley where he joined the KOYLI as 201747. He was KIA on 27 November 1917 and is remembered on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval.
Richard Tidswell	Richard was the son of Wilson and Annie Tidswell who in 1901 were living at Balaklava Terrace, West Ardsley. Richard was 8 at the time of the census. He enlisted at Pontefract, where he joined the KOYLI's as 22554 - later being transferred to the Leicestershire Regt., as 19463. He married Emily but after Richard's death she remarried and became Emily Smith. Richard was part of the Mesopotamian Expeditionary Force and he died on 12 July 1917 aged 24. The headstones of the fallen have been removed from this cemetery due to salts in the soil causing them to corrode. A screen wall now stands as a memorial to those who no longer have a headstone to mark their resting place.
John Townend	John was the son of John and Sarah of West Ardsley. He enlisted in Doncaster but gave his place of birth as Wakefield when he was born in West Ardsley. John married, M J Townend and they lived at Scarbro' St. Tingley. He joined the KRRC as Rifleman L.Cpl. R/18651. He died of wounds on 25 August 1917 aged 33. He is remembered t Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, nr Poperinghe. He was awarded the MM.
Thomas Walker	Thomas William Walker was the son of John William Walker and Emmelia, his wife of 14 Willow Gr., West Ardsley. Thomas served as Spr., 84964, in the RE's. He died on the 14 February 1919 aged 33 and is remembered at Guelph (Woodland) Cemetery.
William Ward	William served as Pvt., M2/175699 in the ASC. He died on 17 June 1917 aged 27 and is remembered at Underhill Farm Cemetery. By the time of his death he had married a young lady called Lily of 61 Westerton, West Ardsley. Lily later went on to remarry and become Mrs Harland.
Charles Wormald	Possibly, Charles son of Fred and Ellen who in 1915 lived in Preston. Charles joined the Scots Guards, 11984. He died of wounds and is remembered at Boulogne Eastern Cemetery.
William Wood	William born in 1879 was the son of Joe and Grace Wood who in 1901 were living on Batley Road, By 1918 they were living at Hill Top, West Ardsley. William when enlisted in Leeds, stated that he lived in Wakefield. He joined the Cameron Highlanders as S/40303 and died of wounds on 17 October 1918 aged 39. He is remembered at Vaux-Andigney British Cemetery.
Edmund Yardley	Edmund was the son of William and Janet who in 1901 were living at 5 Wood Lane, Bramley (on the night of the census William was not in residence). Edmund married Minnie and they lived at 50 Council Houses, Dewsbury Rd, Tingley. Sources differ as to his place of birth - Jump or Tingley. Edmund died of wounds on 15 February 1919 aged 32 He lies in Woodkirk Churchyard. Edmund was awarded the DCM and Medaille Militaire (France)

1939 - 1945
Thomas Armriding	Thomas, also lies in Woodkirk Cemetery. He served in the Royal Navy as JX 263428 onboard HMS Victory. He died aged 30 on 19 August 1942 aged 30
John D Armstrong	John Douglas served in the RASC as 7627673, He died on 25 November 1940 aged 24 and is buried in Morley Cemetery. He left a widow, Lily.
Norman H Ashworth	Norman Hanson Ashworth served in the RAF as a Flight Sergeant, no 566406. He died on 24 Mar 1945 aged 28 and is remembered at Cottingley, Crematorium, Leeds. He left a widow, Phyllis May.
Thomas Baldwin	Thomas was the son of Peter and Elizabeth Baldwin of Tingley. He served as a trooper in the Royal Tank Corps., as 7921357. He died on 10 June 1942 aged 33 and is remembered at Knightsbridge War Cemetery, Acroma near Tobruk along with over 2000 other casualties. He left a widow, Mary
Eric Barker	Eric served in the KOYLI as 4692984 during WW2. He was the son of Sam and Ruth of West Ardsley. Eric died on 5 April 1944 aged 24 and is remembered at Beach Head War Cemetery, Anzio.
Edgar Bedford	Edgar was the son of Woollin and Mary Ada Bedford of East Ardsley. He served in the Royal Armoured Corps, West Riding Regt., He died on 1 February 1943 aged 22 and is remembered at Taukkyan War Cemetery, approx. 35 km north of Rangoon
Cyril Broadbent	Cyril was the son of Barber and Minnie Broadbent and husband of Jeannie of West Ardsley. He served in the Royal Armoured Corps., Northamptonshire Yeom. 7940510. He died on 23 March 1945 aged 31 and is remembered at Reichswald Forest War Cemetery,
Albert V Dale	Albert Victor was the son of Albert and Margaret and husband of Betsy of Tingley. he served in the Black Watch as L/Cpl. 4621220. He died on 24 October 1944 aged 29 and is remembered at Cesena War Cemetery
Cyril Doyle	Cyril was the son of William and Jenny of West Ardsley. He served in the RASC as S/126848. He died on 20 August 1945 aged 25 and is remembered at Woodkirk Churchyard
Raymond Elliott	Raymond served in the Irish Guards as Cpl. 2721272. He was the son of William and Amy of Tingley. Raymond served in North Africa and it was in April 1943 that the Axis powers were defeated resulting in many deaths including Raymond on the 27 April 1943 aged 28. He is remembered on the Medjez-el-Bab Memorial, some 60km west of Tunis along with over 1900 other casualties. Raymond left a widow, Nellie.
Joseph A Etheridge	Joseph Arthur was the son of George and Mary of Tingley. He served in the RAFVR as 1457188. He is remembered on the Runnymede Memorial
Ernest Gash	Ernest Gash was the son of Richard and Betsy of Batley. He served in the Green Howards as 14426299. He died on 9 September 1944 aged 19 and is remembered at Geel War Cemetery near Antwerp

Willie Hirst	Willie was the son of John George and Mary Ann who lived in Tingley. He served in the York and Lancs. as 4748502. He died on 26 April 1940 aged 21 and is remembered at Kvan Churchyard approx. 75 km north of Lillehammer, Norway. He lied alongside 54 identified casualties
John Ibbeson	John was the son of Henry and Sarah Ann. He had married Ivy and they lived at Flushdyke. John served in the RE's as 2154578. He died on 9 April 1945 aged 35 and is remembered on the Cassino Memorial
Percy Ingham	Possibly, husband of Annie of Purlwell Hall Road, Batley who was injured there on December 12th 1940 and died at Staincliffe Hospital. Percy was a civilian who died as a result of enemy action.
John Kellett	John was the son of John and Hannah and husband of Gladys. He served as a Flying Officer in the RAFVR as 129552. He died on 27 November 1943 aged 20 and is remembered on the Runnymede Memorial

Reginald Marshall	Reginald was the son of John Henry and Annie who lived in Tingley. Reginald served as a Serg. W. Op (air) 1544531. He died on 20 May 1944 aged 22 and is remembered in Woodkirk Churchyard
Joseph E Mortimer	Joseph Edward was the son of Albert and Lily of Tingley. He served in the RAFVR with the rank of Sergeant, no 1002556. he died on 12 September 1941 aged 19 and is remembered on the Runnymede Memorial

Dennis O Moss	Dennis Oswald Moss was the son of Dennis and Martha (nee Holmes) and husband of Ruth (nee Briggs). He served as a Pilot Officer (Air bomber) in the RAFVR as 130874. He died on 27 February 1943 aged 30 and is remembered in Morley Cemetery.

John C Richardson	John Clarke Richardson was the son of John William and Jane Elizabeth of Westerton. John served as an Able Seaman in the Royal Navy as D/JX 265799 on board HMS Pressident III. He died on 13 August 1941 aged 28 and is remembered in Woodkirk Churchyard
George R Rimmington	George Richard Rimmington was the son of Richard and Emma and husband of Margaret Mary of West Ardsley. George served as a Leading Seaman in the Royal Navy, no D/JX 422845 on board HMS Manatee. George died on 23 February 1944 aged 33 and is remembered at Cottingley Crematorium
Kenneth Roberts	Kenneth, son of Benjamin and Glady from West Ardsley. Kenneth served as a Sergt., Pilot in the RAF as 655773. He died on 20 March 1943 aged 23 and is remembered at Beja War Cemetery, 96 km from Tunis, Tunisia.

Austin Waring	Austin, son of Gladstone and Emily Amelia or Morley. Austin served in the Royal Corps of Signals as signalman 2359037. He died on 4 March 1943 aged 22 and is remembered at Kanchanaburi War Cemetery, approx 129 km NW of Bangkok, Thailand.
Ewart G Waring	Ewart Gladstone Waring was the brother of Austin. He also served in the Royal Corps of Signals. Ewart was L/Cpl 2352277. He died on 29 November 1943 aged 33 and is remembered on the Singapore Memorial along with over 24000 other casualties.
Clarence Wilkinson	Clarence served in the RASC as Pte., T/2756412. He died on 3 July 1944 aged 25 and is remembered at Marden Cemetery. Clarence left a widow, Ethel.
Levi Yates	Levi was the son of John and Liza of Wakefield and husband of Daisy Mary of West Ardsley. Levi served in the Corps of Military Police as Cpl. 7689635. He died on 16 December 1944 aged 33 and is remembered at Schoonselhof Cemetery.
